Good morning Stellenbosch,

This week we've learned three important things.

Firstly, a local woman was convinced she was an international drug lord.

Secondly, nobody can find anything to watch despite having access to every movie ever made.

And thirdly, every parent you know is mostly figuring it out as they go along.

Let's get into it.

🚨 Stellenbosch's Most Unlikely Drug Lord

A Stellenbosch woman recently lost almost R10,000 after scammers convinced her she was apparently the female version of Pablo Escobar. Yes, really. The fraudsters posed as police officers during a four-hour video call, accused her of running an international drug-smuggling operation, and eventually persuaded her to transfer money to "clear her name".

The scary part is how sophisticated these scams have become. The callers used fake police uniforms, fake documents, fake offices and a whole lot of pressure to make the story seem believable.

A good reminder that if anyone phones claiming you're wanted by the police, a drug kingpin, or secretly running an international crime syndicate from your lounge in Stellenbosch, hang up and verify everything independently before sending a cent. Real police officers do not ask you to transfer money to prove your innocence.

Sometimes the most dangerous criminals aren't the ones selling drugs. They're the ones making video calls. 😬

🏆 Stellenbosch Wins International Silver

Turns out the rest of Africa is finally catching on to what locals have known for years.

Visit Stellenbosch has won a Silver Award at the International Tourism Film Festival Africa (ITFFA) for its official destination film, placing Stellenbosch among some of the continent's top tourism brands. The competition attracted hundreds of entries from 47 countries, making this no small achievement.

The award recognises excellence in destination marketing and storytelling, with the film showcasing what makes Stellenbosch special: world-class wine, incredible food, rich culture, beautiful scenery, and a town that somehow manages to blend centuries of history with modern creativity.

In other words, they managed to turn our daily reality into an award-winning film.

Not bad for a town where half the population is debating coffee shops, trail runs, wine farms, and whether it's socially acceptable to wear shorts in winter.

Congratulations to the team at Visit Stellenbosch for putting our little corner of the world on the international stage once again. 🍷

📼 Friday Nights Were Simpler

Does anyone else miss video stores?

Friday afternoon was easy.

You'd stop at the video shop on the way home, spend 15 minutes wandering the aisles, choose two or three movies, grab a takeout pizza, and boom...

Your evening was sorted.

The commitment was part of the magic.

Once you rented a movie, that was it.

You were watching it.

Even if it turned out to be terrible.

Especially if it turned out to be terrible.

Today we have Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video, YouTube, Apple TV, and about 17,000 movies available at the touch of a button.

And somehow it's become harder to find something to watch.

Modern Friday night often looks like this:

7:00pm: "Let's watch a movie."

7:15pm: Browsing.

7:45pm: Browsing.

8:10pm: Watching trailers.

8:30pm: Arguing over options.

8:45pm: "There's nothing to watch."

9:00pm: Watching The Office for the 47th time.

We've gained unlimited choice.

But we may have lost the joy of walking into a video store, finding a movie with a cool cover, and taking a chance on it.

Maybe the secret to happiness wasn't more options.

Maybe it was just a VHS, a pizza, and a deadline to return the movie by Sunday.

👶 A Message To All Young Parents

Can we all agree on something?

Nobody knows what they're doing.

Not really.

When you have your first child, you assume there must be some secret group of experienced adults who have parenting completely figured out.

Then you become a parent and realise those adults are just other parents who are also making it up as they go.

Some simply look more confident while doing it.

The family arriving at school perfectly on time with matching water bottles and neatly packed lunchboxes?

Their toddler probably had a meltdown because the toast was cut into squares instead of triangles.

The parent calmly offering wise advice at the braai?

Last week they were Googling:

"Can a child survive eating only yoghurt and fish fingers?"

The truth is that parenting often consists of:

  • making your best guess

  • applying common sense

  • hoping for the best

  • and occasionally apologising when your best guess turns out to be completely wrong

Every stage is new.

The moment you figure out how to parent a two-year-old, they become a three-year-old.

The moment you understand a six-year-old, they become seven.

It's basically a never-ending software update.

So if you're a young parent feeling like everyone else has the manual and you somehow missed the briefing...

Don't worry.

The rest of us are looking around wondering exactly the same thing.

We're all learning on the job.

🎵 Father's Day Is Next Weekend...

Every year we tell ourselves we're going to find Dad the perfect gift.

Then somehow it's three days before Father's Day and we're wandering around a shopping centre wondering whether he really needs another pair of socks.

The challenge with dads is that most of them already buy what they need.

And when you ask them what they want, the answer is usually:

"Nothing."

Which is incredibly unhelpful.

One of the more interesting gift ideas we've come across recently is personalised songs.

You share a few stories, memories, family moments and inside jokes, and they get turned into a song that's completely unique to your dad.

It's the kind of gift that usually gets a laugh, sometimes a tear, and often becomes something the family keeps long after Father's Day is over.

A lot of gifts end up in a drawer.

A song tends to stick around.

If you're still looking for ideas, you can have a look at Gift a Song.

At the very least, it's a little more memorable than socks.

💭 A small thought for today

Life feels faster than ever.

The alarm goes off. The kids need to get to school. There are emails to answer, meetings to attend, bills to pay, groceries to buy, and somehow the cost of everything seems to have doubled overnight.

Before we know it, another week has passed.

Then another month.

Then another year.

It's easy to spend our lives rushing from one thing to the next, always focused on what needs to happen tomorrow.

But perhaps one of the greatest skills we can learn is to slow down, even if only for a few moments.

Put the phone down.

Take a longer walk.

Sit with a coffee without checking notifications.

Watch your children tell a story that could have been told in thirty seconds but somehow takes ten minutes.

Look around and notice where you are right now.

Because one day, these busy days that sometimes feel overwhelming will become the days we miss the most.

So this weekend, try slowing down just a little.

The world can wait for a few minutes.
