🎨 A Staircase To Nowhere... Or Everywhere?

If you've walked down Dorp Street recently and found yourself looking up in confusion, you're not alone.

A striking new public artwork, Staircase to Heaven, has appeared at 99 Dorp Street as part of Dream Scapes, a new outdoor sculpture initiative by the Stellenbosch Outdoor Sculpture Trust.

Created by renowned South African artist Strijdom van der Merwe and manufactured and installed by GDL Signs, the illuminated steel staircase appears to climb into the sky before simply... stopping.

And that's exactly the point.

Like many great pieces of public art, it invites everyone to interpret it differently. Is it about hope? Ambition? Curiosity? Or perhaps a reminder that not every journey needs a destination.

Staircase to Heaven is just one of several sculptures now transforming Stellenbosch into an open-air gallery, encouraging residents and visitors to slow down, look around, and experience familiar streets in an entirely new way.

🥩 A Steak Worth Leaving Home For

If you've been wondering where to go for a proper winter dinner in Stellenbosch, here's one worth adding to your list.

Tucked away on Dorp Street, De Vleispaleis Steakhouse has quietly built a reputation as one of the town's top destinations for meat lovers. The restaurant specialises in premium AAA-grade steaks, cooked over open flames, alongside slow-roasted favourites, fresh seafood and an excellent selection of South African wines.

The atmosphere strikes that rare balance between cosy and upmarket. Think roaring winter dinners, friendly service, and the kind of place where you arrive planning on "just a quick meal" and somehow end up lingering over dessert.

Whether you're celebrating something special or simply looking for an excuse to escape the kitchen this weekend, De Vleispaleis is another reminder of why Stellenbosch continues to be one of South Africa's best food towns.

Just don't make the mistake of arriving hungry and ordering "something light."

You probably won't.

🤣 The School Holidays Have Officially Begun

Congratulations to every teacher in Stellenbosch.

Your annual transfer of chaos back to the parents has been completed successfully.

At approximately 1pm today, thousands of children walked out of school carrying one lunchbox, three jerseys that don't belong to them, six crumpled art projects and enough energy to power Koeberg for a week.

Parents, meanwhile, have entered survival mode.

By 8:15am tomorrow morning you'll hear the first:

"What's for breakfast?"

At 8:27am:

"What's for lunch?"

At 8:41am:

"Can I have a snack?"

At 8:52am:

"There's nothing to eat in this house."

Despite the fridge being so full it requires two people to close the door.

The greatest mystery of school holidays isn't where to take the kids.

It's how one child can eat R3,000 worth of groceries before lunchtime and still ask, with complete confidence:

"Can we get McDonald's?"

To all the parents... stay strong.

To all the teachers... enjoy your well-deserved holiday.

We'll see you all in a few weeks when parents are politely asking, "School starts on Monday... right?"

📚 Plein Street Library Opens A New Chapter

One of Stellenbosch's best-loved public spaces has officially reopened after receiving a major makeover.

The Plein Street Library welcomed visitors back this week following an extensive refurbishment that has transformed the building into a brighter, more modern community hub. The upgrades include new computer and technology facilities, improved accessibility for people with disabilities, upgraded electrical and plumbing systems, refreshed interiors, and a redesigned early childhood development area for young readers.

The project was made possible through a partnership between Stellenbosch Municipality and the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport, with the goal of creating a space that is far more than just shelves of books.

Libraries have quietly become some of the most valuable public spaces in our communities. They're places where children discover a love of reading, students prepare for exams, job seekers access the internet, and residents of all ages can learn something new.

In a world where almost everything happens on a screen, it's encouraging to see Stellenbosch continuing to invest in spaces that bring people together and make knowledge accessible to everyone.

🍷 Stellenbosch Winery Wins Gold On The World Stage

Another Stellenbosch wine has earned international recognition.

Visio Vintners, an empowerment wine brand based in Stellenbosch, has been awarded a prestigious Gold medal at the 2026 Decanter World Wine Awards in London for its Alliance 2022 red blend.

Anesca Achilles, marketing co-ordinator of Visio Vintners, with the Decanter awarded wine

To put that into perspective, the Decanter World Wine Awards is one of the most respected wine competitions in the world, with almost 17,000 wines from 58 countries judged through blind tastings by some of the industry's leading experts. Gold medals are reserved for wines scoring between 95 and 96 points, placing them among the very best entries.

What makes this achievement even more significant is the story behind the bottle.

Visio Vintners is a partnership between Kleine Zalze Wines and the Kleine Zalze Empowerment Trust, which is owned and managed by employees working across the business. The project was created to provide meaningful ownership, skills development and long-term opportunities within South Africa's wine industry.

Their award-winning Alliance 2022 is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Shiraz, produced from vineyards on the slopes of Stellenbosch, an area long regarded as one of South Africa's premier regions for world-class red wines.

It's another reminder that Stellenbosch continues to produce not only exceptional wines, but also innovative businesses that are helping shape the future of the South African wine industry.

💭 A small thought for today

I came across a quote recently that stopped me in my tracks:

"Your death will come on an ordinary day, in the middle of unfinished plans, and the world will continue without you. So live a little."

It's a confronting thought.

We often imagine life ending after we've finally ticked everything off the list. After we've finished renovating the house. After we've built the business. After we've retired. After we've travelled. After we've "got our life together."

But that's not how life works.

One day will simply be... an ordinary day.

There will still be emails waiting for replies. There will be laundry in the basket. There will be projects left unfinished, books left unread, places still on your bucket list and conversations you thought you had more time to have.

The world won't stop. The sun will still rise. People will still drive to work. Children will still laugh in playgrounds. Life will continue.

Oddly, I don't find that depressing.

I find it incredibly liberating.

It reminds me that life isn't about getting to the end of a perfectly completed checklist. There will always be another task, another meeting, another deadline, another reason to postpone the things that really matter.

So don't wait until everything is in order before you allow yourself to live.

Go for the dinner.
Take the trip.
Start the business.
Spend time with your children.
Watch the sunset without checking your phone.

Life isn't something that begins once you've finished everything else.

It's what happens while everything else is still unfinished.
