🎓 Stellenbosch Among The World's Best Universities
Stellenbosch University has once again secured its place among the world's leading higher education institutions, ranking 296th globally in the latest QS World University Rankings.
The ranking places the university within the top 300 universities worldwide, a significant achievement considering that thousands of institutions across the globe are evaluated each year.
The rankings assess universities based on factors such as academic reputation, employer reputation, research impact, international collaboration and sustainability.
For Stellenbosch and the wider Winelands community, the recognition is a reminder of the important role the university continues to play in education, research and innovation, both locally and internationally.
The university attracts students, academics and researchers from around the world and remains one of South Africa's most respected institutions of higher learning.
As Stellenbosch continues to grow as a centre for education, business and innovation, achievements such as these further strengthen the town's reputation on the global stage.
🍷 Winter's Best Excuse To Leave The House
There are two types of people in winter.
Those who stay home under a blanket convincing themselves they're perfectly happy.
And those who discover a good meal, a glass of red wine and a roaring fireplace are actually much better ideas.
Stellenbosch Reserve has launched a new winter special that feels tailor-made for the colder months. The three-course menu includes corn and parmesan arancini, sirloin steak with creamy mash and mushrooms, and a warm pecan nut cake with caramel sauce to finish. Each course comes with a suggested wine pairing from the estate.
At R550 for three courses, it's the kind of outing that reminds you why winter in the Winelands is so special. Outside, the vineyards are quiet and the mountains are green. Inside, there is good food, good wine and no pressure to be anywhere else.
The best part? This is only the beginning. Stellenbosch Reserve plans to introduce a different blackboard menu each month throughout winter, giving locals another reason to embrace the season rather than simply endure it.
Sometimes the best weekends are the ones where you don't actually go very far.
Tucked away in the beautiful Banhoek Conservancy, just 10 minutes from Stellenbosch, is a hidden lakeside cabin that feels like it belongs somewhere deep in the mountains of New Zealand or Canada.
Avocado Cottage sits right on the edge of a tranquil lake, surrounded by towering mountains, hiking trails and some of the best mountain biking routes in the Western Cape. The modern cabin features a private wood-fired hot tub, a hammock net suspended over the water, a lakeside jetty and access to an infrared sauna.
The experience is designed around slowing down. Wake up to mountain views, enjoy a coffee on the deck, take a swim in the dam, explore the farm's 60 hectares of natural beauty, then finish the day soaking in your hot tub under the stars.
Guests are welcomed with a bottle of the farm's own wine, while those wanting to fully embrace farm life can also purchase grass-fed beef, lamb and locally produced olive oil.
It's the kind of place that reminds you that sometimes the perfect getaway isn't a flight away. It's hiding just around the corner from home.
🏉 The Springbok Carpet Season Has Officially Begun
The Springbok rugby season is back.
Which means South Africans across the country will once again gather around televisions armed with boerewors rolls, biltong, chips, dip, beer and an optimism that lasts right up until the first controversial referee decision.
It's a wonderful tradition.
Unfortunately, so is what happens to the carpet.

Somewhere this weekend, a perfectly balanced boerewors roll will launch itself off a lap during a try celebration.
A child will sprint through the lounge carrying tomato sauce for reasons nobody fully understands.
Someone will insist they're "fine" after knocking over a beer, despite the fact that half of it is now soaking into the floor.
And at least one guest will perform the classic South African clean-up technique of placing a cushion over the stain and hoping nobody notices.
By Sunday evening, the rugby may be over, but the evidence remains.
Tiny crumbs. Mystery stains. A suspicious patch that definitely wasn't there before kick-off.
The Springboks aren't the only ones putting in a hard shift this winter.
So are South Africa's carpets.

🏛️ The Stellenbosch That Almost Disappeared
It's hard to imagine Stellenbosch without its oak-lined streets, Cape Dutch buildings and historic charm.
But a fascinating collection of before-and-after photographs shows that the town we know today could have looked very different. During the 1960s and 1970s, a number of historic buildings were demolished and replaced with apartment blocks, offices and more modern developments. Some beautiful old structures were lost forever, while others were thankfully preserved and restored.
Looking through the photographs is a reminder that Stellenbosch's character wasn't guaranteed. The town's unique identity exists today because generations of residents, architects, historians and conservationists fought to protect what made it special.
As Stellenbosch continues to grow, the images raise an interesting question: how do we embrace progress without losing the charm that made people fall in love with the town in the first place?
Fortunately, if you stroll down Dorp Street, Church Street or around the historic town centre today, the answer seems to be that Stellenbosch is doing a pretty good job of balancing both.
💭 A small thought for today
It's easy to spend life feeling like you're permanently five steps behind.
There are school lunches to make, emails to answer, bills to pay, meetings to attend, businesses to grow, washing to fold, and somehow you're also supposed to exercise, drink more water and remember where you left your car keys.
Many of us spend our days running so fast that we never stop to ask: What exactly am I running towards?
Every now and then, it's worth stepping off the treadmill for a moment and remembering that life isn't a productivity competition.
The meaning of life probably isn't found in an empty inbox, a perfectly clean house, or finally getting through your to-do list. There will always be another task waiting tomorrow.
Maybe it's found in the ordinary moments we rush past. A cup of coffee before the house wakes up. A laugh with your kids. A walk with your partner. A conversation with a friend. A sunset. A quiet moment where nobody needs anything from you.
The irony is that while we're busy trying to build a good life, we're often standing right in the middle of it.
Today, take a breath.
The emails can wait five minutes.
Life is happening now. Not when everything is finally under control. Because, if we're honest, it probably never will be.
