🥃 Stellenbosch Raid... R12 Million Worth Of Illegal Alcohol

If you've ever spotted a bottle of premium whisky being sold for less than a Spur burger and thought, "That seems like a bargain," this week's news is a timely reminder that bargains sometimes come with a catch.

A joint operation involving SAPS, the Western Cape Liquor Authority and SARS Customs has uncovered an alleged illegal alcohol storage facility in Plankenbrug, Stellenbosch. After monitoring the premises, officers moved in and confiscated an estimated R12 million worth of illicit alcohol. Investigators have opened a criminal case, although no arrests have been announced yet.

Now, R12 million is a lot of alcohol.

That's enough to make you wonder how many braais, birthdays, weddings, rugby weekends and "I'm only having one" Fridays it was destined for.

The bigger issue isn't just unpaid tax or counterfeit labels. Illicit alcohol can be impossible to trace, may not meet safety standards, and leaves legitimate local liquor stores, wineries and distributors competing against products that were never meant to be on the market in the first place.

So the next time someone offers you a bottle of "imported premium whisky" from the boot of their car at a price that seems too good to refuse...

It might be worth asking a few questions.

Or at the very least, ask why they're running a liquor store out of a hatchback. 🥃🚔

Most of us have looked at a stray cat and thought, "Shame."

Then we carried on with our day.

A handful of women in Stellenbosch did the opposite.

Instead of walking past, they've quietly taken on the enormous task of feeding, sterilising and caring for nearly 40 stray cats, spending their own time and money to make sure these forgotten felines have food, medical care and, where possible, a chance at finding a forever home.

It's not glamorous work.

There are no sponsorship deals, no standing ovations and certainly no cats lining up to say thank you. Just early mornings, late nights, endless food bowls, vet bills and the occasional scratched arm from a patient who isn't particularly grateful.

Yet they keep showing up.

Whether you're a cat person, a dog person, or someone who insists they're "not really an animal person", it's hard not to admire people willing to invest so much of themselves into helping creatures that have nobody else looking out for them.

So here's a little shout-out to Stellenbosch's unofficial cat guardians.

The next time you see a healthy stray cat wandering around town, there's a decent chance it didn't get that way by accident. Somewhere behind the scenes, someone with a bag of cat food, a lot of patience, and an even bigger heart has probably been quietly making a difference. 🐾❤️

Your heart rate doubles.

You don't even read the description.

You don't look at the photos.

You don't ask the price.

You simply hit Call with the speed and determination of someone trying to buy Springbok test tickets.

The phone rings.

"Hi, I saw your ad..."

"Oh, sorry. It's already taken."

Taken?

Ma'am... it was listed one minute and two seconds ago.

At this point, we're convinced there are people sitting with camping chairs, three monitors, fibre internet and military-grade notification systems dedicated exclusively to Facebook rental groups.

Somehow they've already viewed the property, submitted six months of bank statements, passed the credit check, signed the lease and collected the keys before the rest of us have even managed to zoom in on the first photo.

The rest of us are still typing, "Hi, is this still available?" into Messenger... knowing full well the answer is already "No." 😅🏡

Imagine living in a neighbourhood where most of the electricity you're using was generated just a few metres away.

Where the lights stay on thanks to a giant shared battery.

Where the community doesn't just talk about sustainability... it was designed around it from day one.

That's exactly what's happening at Newinbosch, a new Stellenbosch development that's doing things a little differently.

Instead of every house trying to fend for itself with its own solar panels and inverter, the entire precinct operates on what's believed to be South Africa's first renewable residential microgrid.

There are more than 17,000 square metres of solar panels spread throughout the development, all feeding into a shared battery system that powers the neighbourhood as a whole.

The result?

Around 60% of the community's electricity is generated right there on site.

No extension cords running to the neighbour's house.

No one arguing over whose inverter gets priority.

Just a neighbourhood producing a large chunk of its own power.

It's an interesting glimpse into what future residential developments could look like. As electricity prices continue to rise and South Africans become increasingly familiar with phrases like "Stage 6", "battery backup" and "load shedding schedule", developments that generate and manage their own energy are becoming far more attractive than they might have seemed a few years ago.

The project has also attracted international attention, recently being named World's Best Sustainable Residential Development at the International Property Awards.

Whether this becomes the blueprint for future estates remains to be seen.

But one thing is certain...

If your biggest argument with your neighbours is over whose turn it is to water the plants instead of whose generator is making all the noise...
